Happy International Women’s Day!
International Women’s Day is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day is an opportunity to recognize progress and redouble efforts to support gender equality around the world. The United Nation’s theme for this year’s celebration is “Planet 50-50: Step It Up for Gender Equality,” which focuses on achieving gender equality through international cooperation, including supporting the Sustainable Development Goals agreed to by UN member states in 2015.Both the United States and the United Kingdom dedicate the entire month of March to recognizing women’s many social, political, and economic contributions throughout history.
In honor of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, the LRC is highlighting stories of inspirational women, both real and imaginary. Come read about historical giants like Cleopatra, Queen Victoria and Rosa Parks. Or learn how a single law in the United States transformed women’s participation in college athletics and beyond. Our shelves are also full of fictional women who rocked their own worlds and whose stories can inspire ours. Settle down in the reading lounge and discover the determination of Anne of Green Gables or revisit the extraordinary courage of Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games.
Tell us, what fictional heroine inspired you?
